Everyone Can Lead…and Here’s how to Start

We have all met people who are officially a Leader or Manager but who really don’t lead at all.   We also know people who have no formal title but, when they speak, everyone listens.   That’s the kind of Leader I’m striving to be.  A Leader whom others willingly follow, and, just as importantly, a Leader who helps my team achieve stellar results.  So where do you start and how do you get there?

For centuries the question has been asked if people are born leaders or if they can be taught or trained to become one. 

In sports some people have more natural ability than others; and yet, as has been proven again and again, natural ability alone does not always translate into better results on the scoreboard. The same can be said about leadership.  Natural skill or ability are not enough to be a great leader in today’s ever changing marketplace.

I firmly believe that no matter your DNA, background or experience you can learn to be a more effective Leader.  In fact, we all have the responsibility to be leaders in every area of our lives.

With that in mind I believe there are three essential areas everyone must work on if they’re going to be a Great Leader.   

I like to think of them as three legs of a stool (if any of them is missing, or is weak, failure is certain):

  1. Who are you as an individual?

  2. How do you lead?

  3. Do you get results?

Each is necessary, but none alone is sufficient.

General Norman Schwarzkopf put it this way:  “If you look at Leadership failures in the United States over the last 100 years, 99% of those failures were a failure in character, not failures in competence).”

I believe that failures in character are prime examples of failures in Who you are and How you lead?   Competence boils down to what kinds of results you achieved.  History is full of Leaders who achieved short term results but eventually experienced catastrophic long term failure because they lost sight of who they were, what they stood for and what was really important.

Over the next few months we will focus on the basic things we can all do to get better results and be more effective individuals and leaders.  Consistent focus in all three areas will help you achieve the kind of success most people only dream of.

Kent has lived all over the United States and in Europe.He graduated from the University of Alabama with a B.S. in Business Administration/Finance and an MBA (all in four years) graduating with Honors.
Kent’s work experience has varied tremendously.Prior to Co-Founding BPS he spent nearly 24 years with Franklin Covey as a Managing Partner leading a large Sales and Consulting Team, Consultant and Client Partner.He also spent three years in Europe as a Soviet Military Intelligence Analyst for the U.S. Army, seven years as a Sales Representative and Sales Manager; and four years as a Financial Manager and Operations Leader with a Fortune 100 consumer products company.

Kent and his wife (the love of his life) have been married for 35 years and have three amazing children. He loves swimming, running, cycling, Martial Arts, working out, and hanging out with his family. Kent continues to be goal oriented earning his first black belt (in Tae Kwon Do) on his 40th birthday, running a marathon for his 45th birthday, completing a mile swim for his 50th and recently completing multiple Sprint Triathalons.
