Five Aspects of WOMEN by Mary K Weinhagen

Mary K WeinhagenLet’s look at five aspects that distinguish women from men so we can decide what marketing approaches could be tweaked for better effectiveness. When a man says, “I’ll think about it,” the sale is usually gone. When a woman says, “I’ll think about it,” she really means it! If you really think about it this should come as no surprise… but women believe, perceive and behave differently that men. If you’re smart, you will let that fact guide you in marketing both your product and your opportunity. Because this month at The Network Marketing Magazine we are focusing on WOMEN, I thought it might be helpful to share some of the new findings of modern gender research and see how we can put that information to use in our marketing. After all, tactics tailored specifically to women’s needs and preferences is far more likely to attract the perfect women to your team. NULL

While there are many differences between men and women we want to get a handle on the differences that really matter. Marti Barletta’s site, The TrendSight Group uses the GenderTrends™ model to organize findings from such disparate groups of study about gender as anthropology, brain structure, human development, sociolinguistics, and more into 3 areas:

(1) inherent differences in male/female gender culture (2) differences in how women respond to each of the twelve elements of the marketing mix (3) differences in the goals and process of reaching a purchase decision

Of course, the question is, how does having information about gender differences lead us to meaningful action? How does being aware that women are different from men on a given criterion help us design and conduct a marketing program? Let’s look at five aspects that distinguish women from men so we can decide what marketing approaches could be tweaked for better effectiveness. Women tend to be multitaskers by nature. This can be a great advantage in starting up a business as there are several different aspects needing attention. But while a woman can multitask well, she doesn’t necessarily want to do everything; So pointing out that she will be in business for herself but not by herself is a strong ‘selling’ point. Women tend to be more sociable than men. In the network marketing industry it’s a strength to be outgoing and well-connected. Even women who consider themselves “shy” are likely to have a well established network of friends, co-workers and acquaintances. And most women look forward to seeing that circle grow. Women are more nurturing. Here’s an interesting discovery I made while exploring this topic. While women are more nurturing, women entrepreneurs/business founders are much more willing to discipline an under-performing employee, and much more likely to fire a non-performing employee than men are. At first I found this odd… then it dawned on me. It’s like that Mom vs Dad thing. Dad’s the ‘fun’ parent… while mom worries about health and safety and acceptable behavior. She puts her foot down. (I’m not saying that Mom’s have an exclusive on this… remember we’re just talking about tendencies here). How does this fit into network marketing? Women have a great capacity to build a strong team because they strive to take great care of their business partners… and that includes expecting them to show up as their best selves. Women tend to stick with a product or company longer, trying to work through it to find the answers. Here we’re talking about loyalty. Carried to an extreme it can work against us, but where men are more likely to abandon something as soon as they think there is a better opportunity available, as long as she doesn’t carry it to the extreme of truly “beating a dead horse”, a women will be in it for the long term. Women are motivated by ventures with a social purpose. Where men are more interested in ventures that maximize revenue and profits, women are more keyed into ventures with a social purpose. The valuable thing about this piece of information is that when talking to women about your opportunity or product, you’re more likely to get a favorable response when you touch on social values than on how much money they can make. Have a wonderful December… and be sure to let the women in your life know how much you appreciate them.
