Happy New Beginning! By Russ DeVan

A “new beginning.” The notion that we get a brand new year every January first; a clean new piece of paper to write our dreams, our goals, our commitments, and our LIFE on, going forward, I say, is what puts the “happy” in “Happy New Year!”

But not always. It’s not always fun to face disappointment after investing time, sweat, struggle, and hard work in something, only to feel like a rat who after an hour in a maze finally figured out there was no cheese at the end of any of the tunnels.

The only true failure comes when we don’t begin again…or at all. The iconic fictional hero, Rocky Balboa, famously said “it’s not about how hard you can hit, but how hard you can GET hit, and still  GET up and get back in the fight!”

So… you were going to “build” a six-figure income in MLM last year and your friends and spouse all laughed and said you were nuts. Now it’s a year….or three, or TEN…later, and after 16 readings of Think and Grow Rich, you are still figuring it out.

How many times did Edison begin, AGAIN, while attempting what we now know as the light bulb?

A new beginning is a gift from God. Almost five decades ago, a college buddy of mine told me I could begin my whole life again. All my blunders, all my mistakes, all my “sins” could be forgiven, if I would only accept Jesus Christ as my personal savior and ask for his love and guidance. I remember to this day what that new beginning felt like and it was and still is, a defining moment in my life.

I’d like to say that I never had to begin over ever again, after that, but of course, you would know that is not the truth.

I have failed in more ways than I can possibly count. I’ve been broke, divorced, alone, and even shaken hands with the Grim Reaper once or twice. I’ve also been honored, loved, acknowledged, befriended, saved, in love, and blessed with a beautiful daughter that I adore, and perhaps at least by some standards, financially successful…but I am most grateful for “wealth beyond measure” in friends and amazing relationships. I have been afforded so much and so many opportunities to learn, grow, benefit from mistakes, and begin something new ALL OVER AGAIN!

One of my favorite authors. Rudyard Kipling wrote:

“IF you can make one heap of all your winnings and risk it on one turn of pitch and toss. AND LOSE,

And never breathe a word about your loss…”

Rudyard can say in a quick verse, what I have endeavored to in this rambling opus and have most likely fallen short. Thank God, for new beginnings!

Go forth in this new year without judging how far you’ve gotten up to this point, but celebrate and rejoice in what you’ve learned and WHERE you are going with a BRAND NEW SHOT! Please remember, and I may be risking redundancy here, but I believe it bears repeating:

A little known 20th Century Philosopher named William H. Murray said:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, a chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all matters of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans”

All sorts of things occur to help one that never would have otherwise occurred. A whole stream of events are issued from that one decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents no man would have dreamed were possible.

I have learned a deep respect from one of Goethe’s most famous couplets:

‘ Are you in earnest? Seize this very minute! Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, BEGIN it.

Boldness has beauty, genius, magic, and power in it….only ENGAGE, and the mind grows heated. BEGIN IT, and the work will be completed!’
