Walk into any leadership event at LifeVantage, and you’ll notice a palpable energy and excitement.

It’s motivating. It’s engaging. And more often than not, it’s coming from the women. They have, in many ways, become the heart and soul of our company. These women are also among the most talented leaders I’ve ever had the privilege of working with.

2018 has been referred to as a Year of the Woman. And with good cause.

Women are continuing to make inroads in society as well as business – albeit at a slower pace than hoped. At LifeVantage, we’re seeing more and more women emerging as leaders. I’ve often wondered what makes them so successful. Is it our model? Our culture? Is it a more level playing field that our industry encourages? In full disclosure, as a man, becoming a successful woman in network marketing isn’t something I have actually done, only observed. So I asked some of the finest leaders at LifeVantage, who happen to be women, tell their own stories. Here are a few, in their own words.

Amber Swanson

I was kicked out of college and told I would never amount to anything. Years later, I was a single parent trying to make ends meet. My child was always the one getting dropped off at daycare first and getting picked up last. I was doing garage sales to pay my bills. And I hated it. All of it. I wanted to be a present mom, but I also had to provide for my family as a single mom. It’s not an easy task when the deck is stacked against you. My daughter doesn’t remember this point in her life. But I do. It fueled me.

And since she was 9-years old, I’ve been able to work from home. I’m happy that’s all she’ll remember.

When I was introduced to network marketing, I was floored by the fact that I could have a career that didn’t force me to choose between being a mom and actually having a career. As women, we’re constantly forced to make that choice. Now that I’ve built my business, it’s easy to reflect on why women are successful network marketers. I believe that a successful business runs off of the willingness to be vulnerable and honest. And these are two things women are very good at.

Today, I work with a lot of women. I’m helping develop them into leaders. I tell them to be coachable, have a really great work ethic, and put in the time. This industry doesn’t care about gender, age, or ethnicity. If you’ve got a vision and you’re willing to work hard at it – you’ll get to where you want to go.

 Kim Koebensky

I was the top recruiter in the nation for my former company. I had worked my way up the corporate ladder and then moved into sales, but I found myself in a situation where I was working long hours in a high-stress environment that was no longer conducive to family life. I eventually found network marketing. My health and life have been completely changed by it. Since then, my mission has been to share my story with my entire network. That prior career helped me realize what I love so much about this industry. It’s all about people.

As a woman in network marketing, I’m a part of something bigger than myself. I’m able to link arms with other amazing women who are supportive and driven. And what makes us successful? I think women have the unique ability to lift people up. We can nurture. We can build relationships, and we can connect with others. And that’s what this business is all about – building authentic relationships and inspiring people to do something they never thought they were capable of. We all start at the same level.

It’s the sacrifices you’re willing to make – not your gender or where you come from – that ultimately makes you successful. It’s an even playing field.

This industry is a rare opportunity for women to have it all if they want it: freedom, income, and family. You don’t have to pick and choose. We get to work with a lot of women in our industry. They’re remarkable entrepreneurs. To keep each other going, we give a lot of recognition. We build friendships. And we make sure that relationships always come first. I tell these women to never stop believing in themselves. In a world full of stereotypes, I tell them to never, ever let others dictate their ability to succeed.

Samantha Allen

My husband and I are both in the military. Before I stumbled on this industry, we had moved five or six times. And since then, we’ve been able to put down roots and essentially replace my husband’s salary. That, in and of itself, is incredible.

But more important is the opportunity my business has afforded me to work full time and also take care of my children full time. It’s incredible. I’m able to build a thriving business in the nooks and crannies of my life. Fifteen minutes here, an hour there. In the process, I’ve been able to homeschool my children and not feel like I’m missing out on my career.

I can’t think of any other opportunity out there that would give me so much freedom to live my life.

I believe this industry helps women use their gifts as natural connectors to become leaders. When we believe in something, we want to share it with each other. So when we find products we love, the sharing conversation is effortless.

We have a lot of women in our organization who have never led people before. And from assigning motivational books to helping them identify and build their natural strengths, I love working with them to build those leadership skills. It’s an amazing opportunity for myself, but I’ve also noticed it trickling down to my daughters, who are six and three years old. I’m able to show them that a mom can be a business leader. Both are picking up on the ways I interact with my team members, and it’s incredible to see. We’ll walk down the street and they’ll give random compliments to people. Beyond the money and everything else this business has to offer – being a good example is what I really cherish.

So what makes women so successful in our industry? The women we spoke to all talked about many of the qualities that are inherent in our industry: the flexibility to work on their own terms, the ability to have both a family and a career, and an even playing field. They also talked about some of the unique strengths they bring to the industry: their ability to share, be honest, connect, build relationships, and lift.

Each woman in our industry brings her own set of strengths to the table. The impact on our industry is unmistakable. And as an industry, it’s incumbent on us to not only recognize that, but celebrate it.
