Do you know the difference between a mentor and a coach? If you are looking for someone to Mentor you, it’s important that you understand what the difference is between a Mentor and any other definition of coaching type that may be out there. See there are 1000’s of coaches, Life Coaches, Motivational Coaches, Baseball Coaches… the list is almost endless. A Mentor, in my opinion, is different. This type of person is very good at a very few things, they have an advanced experience on many topics, its only 1 or 2 things that they do very very very well. So when you are asking someone to Mentor you, you have to know if they are a Mentor to begin with. Here are somethings you will experience when you are truly being Mentored: NULL
- Much of the training in the beginning will have nothing to do with what you really want to learn.
- Much time will be spent teaching you how to understand more than know.
- As you move through the process you will notice people communicating differently, not because they see something different in you, it’s what you see different in you.
Yes these seem subtle in nature, and may not excite you at all, that’s good. Why do I say that, so you will understand the foundation that needs to be built is not exciting and it is not something everyone wants to do.
If you are willing to truly be Mentored, then you must be ready to experience things that you have not experienced before, to have the things that you have not had before.
If you are willing to feel these kinds of feelings, then let me share with you some of the rewards that you will also experience:
1. A calm knowing that you are working on the goals that are your specialty. 2. You will see a new way of creating value for yourself that only you can provide, and therefore becomes even more value in your given job market. 3. A new vision of the results you have been getting, and a new expectation of the results you will now accept to be satisfactory.
All this to say, if you are being coached and you are getting better at what you asked to be better at, then be confident that you are being coached.
If you are lucky enough to be getting better at all aspects in your life, and by default, you are getting better at the “thing” you wanted to be better at, well then you are being Mentored…
