It’s Never Crowded Along the Extra Mile by Elizabeth Harrington

Elizabeth Harrington“I go with you in all the experience that we’ve had. But I promise you this as we leave here: I will not leave you behind. I’ll take you with me in my thoughts and in my heart.”  Good bye to a true legend and a real gentleman, Jim Rohn. Often I’ve stated, when speaking to groups, that the reason I saw the chance for a better life more than 15 years ago through becoming a Network Marketing Professional was due to a remarkably serendipitous and life changing seminar where I spent 2 ½ days in a small intimate group at the knees of the great Jim Rohn. I was first introduced to Jim Rohn and his words and work through his live seminar “Challenge To Succeed” in 1993. I didn’t know him or of him before I found myself the lucky recipient of a life changing gift from friends who acted as his agents in Canada- a full 2 ½ days with Jim Rohn as my teacher. Sitting at his feet, listening to his deep almost gravelly Nebraskan voice with the ability to hold all 15 of us in spell bound attention! That’s right – only 15 of us! Can you imagine sitting in such a small and intimate group with this legend? NULL

The title of this tribute came about because of the introductory life lesson I learned from Jim Rohn… “It’s never crowded along the extra mile.”

To give some context to this message… I was invited to attend, along with 2500 others, a mesmerizing half day with Jim Rohn in Toronto as part of a sizzly marketing promotion by a large Investment company. He was brilliant as usual and yet at the end of the afternoon talk he told us to look around at the 2500 fellow participants and see how many would actually show up the following day for the full 2 day seminar and the real work for change. Well you know the lesson… only 15 of us showed up. Why? Well one of life’s biggest lessons is “It’s never crowded along the extra mile.” Most don’t go the extra mile in life and that is one of the biggest lessons I’ve ever learned in the Art Of Living An Extraordinary Life – my favorite CD program from Jim Rohn.

True words – simple and laser sharp with his ability to slice complex issues into simple to grasp and then simple to do actions. That was Jim Rohn’s greatest gift to me.

How wise Jim Rohn really was. I took Jim Rohn with me in terms of cassette tapes to a grand adventure to Australia to meet up with my dear friend who had moved there to marry. I listened and listened some more and each time I heard his voice in my ears… comforting, cajoling, passionate and calming… well I started to believe I could carve out a fabulous life, in fact deserved to create an extraordinary life and by golly came back to North America determined and steadfast and said yes to network marketing as the vehicle to deliver this boldly courageous and different lifestyle. One of my favorite tributes was the following as it aptly described the influence that Jim Rohn had on my life… Darren Hardy, dedicated student and Jim Rohn protégé for more than 15 years, said of Jim,

“He was the most influential man in my life, second only to my father. Jim cemented my philosophical foundation and nourished my mind with ideas and ambitions never before imagined. He chiseled my character seminar by seminar, tape by tape, book by book, then CD by CD, hour by hour. Jim emboldened my belief, in me and in my most daring dreams. When I fell and was bloodied, he was there with encouraging words to help me get back up. When I didn’t think I could go on, Jim convinced me I was stronger than I imagined. When I wanted a shortcut, he reminded me there aren’t any. Even when I got too caught up in trying to achieve and succeed, Jim compelled me to leave room to live, to laugh and to love.”

A few more favorite quotes: “Formula for Success: A few simple disciplines practiced every day starts to create success.” – Jim Rohn LEADERSHIP: “A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better.” Even better are the words he used to say to all of us as he closed off his teaching to us:

“I go with you in all the experience that we’ve had. But I promise you this as we leave here: I will not leave you behind. I’ll take you with me in my thoughts and in my heart.”

What a legacy, what a man and thank-you Jim Rohn for encouraging me to take the road less traveled. Remember “It is never crowded along the extra mile”!
