Setting Goals By Joshua Denne
If you want to succeed, you have to set goals. It’s as simple as that.
Goals help you establish a target to aim towards, a destination to set in your preverbal GPS. You wouldn’t get into your car and just start driving without a destination in mind, would you? Of course not. You would first decide on the destination and then chart a course to get there. You will need to set a timeline as well so you can measure your efforts toward a successful destination.
A vital component is to ask yourself: Why? Why do I want to achieve this goal? When you know why, your motivation and desire will fuel you when the hard times come, and self-doubt creeps into your mind. Ask yourself, why do you want this? What will it bring you? What will it feel like? What are the rewards? These are all questions that you need to answer before you set your goals, so you identify what motivates you and how achieving that goal will impact your life.
Make your goals a little bit past realistic.
You can do more and go further than you imagine! However, allow yourself to be flexible with the time frame. You may want great success in six months, but you may not get there in the time you originally thought. Set “baby-step” goals that lead to “bigger-step” goals. As you accomplish each step, you’ll be inspired to reach the next one. Literally, draw a staircase or a ladder and define each step or rung to get to the top.
It is not sufficient to write down a goal that says “Achieve success” or “Make more money.” Give it a number and a deadline, and then work toward that number specifically. The more detailed, the better! A home builder would not break ground on a new home without first creating the blueprints.
Prioritize your goals.
What do you want to accomplish first – speaking engagements or sales? An online presence or collecting investors? Be clear on what comes first, second, third and so on.
Post your goals in front of you.
I have my goals written everywhere, and I mean everywhere! Early in my journey, my goals were stuck on the ceiling above my bed so when I opened my eyes in the morning, I could see them. They were on my dresser, my bathroom mirror, my steering wheel, my fridge, and even inside my fridge! Wherever you look, you want to see your goals, you want to see that reminder which propels you toward your destination. To turn your dream into reality!
Make a pact with a peer, your spouse, or a colleague to hold you accountable for your goals. Check in once a week to discuss the progress you have made toward those goals. Accountability keeps it real and provides emotional support – that feeling that someone’s got your back.
Revise your goals as necessary.
Sometimes we have overly optimistic hopes, and reality gets in the way. If something’s not happening the way you envisioned it, be easy on yourself. Adjust the timeline or the goal itself and move forward. Measurable progress in reasonable time will keep the fire inside of you alive.
Keep your goals in the forefront of your mind, constantly be aware of your own mission statement and do all you can to set yourself up for success. Some call this visualization and believe it to have mystical powers, but there is nothing mysterious or mystical about it! It is positive thinking, and in the truest sense, that is the rock-solid foundation of your success.
Legendary personal development guru Paul J. Meyer said it best: “Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe, and enthusiastically act upon must inevitably come to pass.”
