Two of my favorite self-help books are Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” and Wallace D. Wattles’ classic “The Science of Getting Rich”. Few people are aware that Wattles’ book, written more than 110 years ago, inspired Rhonda Byrnes’ blockbuster film and book, “The Secret”, for which I made a brief contribution. While the Law of Attraction teaches us that thoughts become things and that we become what we think about, in my forty-year career helping develop winners in every walk of life, I’ve come to believe that there are several universal, timeless laws or powers that, when internalized, lead to financial security regardless of industry or occupation.
First, you must embrace the Abundance Mentality, that there is enough success for all, and in accepting that you will give up the Scarcity Mentality that says you must compete because there is not enough to go around.
Second, you must live by the Law of Synergy and give up the competitive mindset that says for every winner there must be a loser, and live by the creative mindset in harmony with the Universe, which is expanding, not contracting. The Law of Synergy proves that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, when you live by the Double Win: “If I help you win, then I win too!”
Third, you must understand and apply the Power of Belief. Winners believe in their dreams, when that’s all they have to hang onto. Know that you have the right to be rich, that you are as good as the best; not necessarily better than the rest. Fortune is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You may not get what you want in life, but you will most likely get what you expect in the long run.
What the mind harbors, the body manifests.
Fourth, you must get a clear, specific, image of what you want and dwell on that with certainty and frequency, as if it is your magnificent obsession. Your mind can’t distinguish that which is real from vivid simulation. Your virtual reality, becomes your reality. The reason most people don’t reach their goals is that they never really set them in the first place. The mind is the most magnificent bio-computer ever created. It doesn’t respond to vague ideas. It thrives on laser images.
Fifth, you must Act Now. This is another universal law of success. It is the Law of Inertia, which states that “Energy in Motion tends to stay in Motion, and Energy at Rest Tends to Stay at Rest.” Through procrastination, you postpone success indefinitely. And inaction breeds more inaction. There are no future decisions, only current ones which forge and impact your future. Develop a sense of “Nowness.” Don’t worry as to whether yesterday’s work was well done or ill done, do today’s work well. Do not try to do tomorrow’s work now; there will be time to do that when you get to it.
Sixth, You must give everyone more than you take from them. In every transaction, you cannot give everyone more in cash market value than you take from them, but you can give them more in use value than the cash value of the thing or service you gain from them. When you provide more in use value or service value than you receive in payment, you will always be sought after for what you have to offer. In a way, you will be underpaid for the excellence you provide and therefore you will always be in great demand by those who seek to make the best investments in people. When things reach you, they will be in the hands of someone else, who will ask you an equivalent for them. And you can only get what is yours, by giving others what is theirs. You must make a fair exchange in value.
This is the crucial point in becoming truly wealthy. The Law of Attraction must be linked to specific Action. It is where thought and personal action must be combined.
There are many people who set the creative forces in action by the strength and persistence of their desires, but who remain poor because they do not provide for the reception of the thing they want when it comes. By thought, the thing you want is brought to you. By action you receive it. Every day think of actions you can take, one step at a time, that will move you closer to achieving your major goals. Make the extra call today. Don’t wait until tomorrow.
And Seventh, you must convey The Impression of Increase to everyone with whom you come in contact. Increase is what all men and women are seeking. The desire for increase is inherent in all nature and is the fundamental impulse of the universe. All human activities are based on the desire for increase. People are seeking more food, better shelter, more luxury, more beauty, more knowledge, more pleasure, more love – increase in something, more life.
Demonstrate the impression of advancement in everything you do, so that all people understand that you are honestly interested in helping them achieve their goals.
People instinctively know when you are motivated by self-interest or team-building. Even to the people you meet in a social setting, without any pre-conceived thought of business, and to whom you don’t try to sell anything; give the thought of increase. No better statement of the principle of creative action can be said than by this paraphrase of The Golden Rule: “What I want for myself, I want for everybody.”
Finally, beyond the seven keys mentioned above, gratitude alone can keep you looking toward abundance and prevent you from falling into the error of thinking that the supply is limited.
When we count our blessings instead of our blemishes, and when we are grateful for what we have, rather than spiteful for what we lack, we radiate a sense of well-being that attracts others to us. The best way to harness the power of gratitude is to spend time helping the less fortunate in our communities. For starters, visit a veteran’s hospital rehabilitating wounded service men and women; or a cancer ward in a children’s hospital; or an orphanage; or senior citizens’ rest home; or a shelter for the homeless. You’ll return home thankful that you have limbs, eyesight, hearing, health, a family, youth and a place to live.
However, the value of gratitude is not only to get you more blessings in the future. Without gratitude you cannot, over time, keep from being discouraged as you watch the bombardment of bad news on prime time TV. To permit your mind to dwell on the mean, the unjust, the unfair and the squalid, is to become inferior in your thoughts. You must focus on solutions and answers. To fix your attention on your blessings and doing your best, is to surround yourself with the best and to become the best. Faith is born of gratitude. The grateful mind continually expects good things, and expectation breeds motivation and a deeper faith.
We will do better in businesses and professions for which we have talent and which we enjoy. By chasing our passion, instead of a pension, we will bring more enthusiasm to all that we do, and not need to rely on a hobby for enjoyment or fulfillment. However, we can gain more knowledge and skills in our present business, and don’t need to change businesses or environments to become rich. Always remember, there are rich people in every profession and in virtually every environment.
