Whenever You Seek to Enrich Another’s Experience, You Can’t Help but Enrich Your Own! By Brian Biro

Never forget that Network Marketing is the PEOPLE business.

It is the relationships you build; it is how you grow and help others grow that will determine how far you will go!  When you embrace that simple truth, you recognize that every interaction with a teammate or prospect is a window of opportunity – a WOO – to elevate another’s spirit, to lift a heart, and to help that prospect or teammate to know they matter.

And, whenever you seek to enrich another person’s experience, to brighten their life in even the smallest, seemingly insignificant way, you can’t help but enrich your own!

That is how you ignite an irrepressible ripple effect that will grow into an unstoppable team where everyone wins!

Recently, I had been assigned one of my least favorite tasks on my long honey-do list: returning items my wife had decided she didn’t want after all. As I stood in a long line at TJ Maxx waiting to return the items, I passed the time observing the seven or eight customer service associates working the registers. It was the very end of the retail day, and both customers and associates looked weary and ready to complete their transactions and head home.

After a moment or two, I found myself drawn to a young, tall, and athletic-looking associate. It was her kind smile and easy warmth with each customer she served that attracted my attention. I noticed that when her customers gathered their bags and left her register, they seemed a little lighter, with a little more spring in their step, than the other shoppers. The welcoming energy she inspired made me hope that I would end up at her register.

As luck would have it, that’s just what happened.

And sure enough, she greeted me as if I was the most important person on the planet. I couldn’t help but feel she was genuinely happy to see me, though we had never met before. And so, I immediately seized the WOO to make sure she realized the difference she made for each shopper.

Returning her radiant smile, I said, “You know, I’ve noticed as I waited in line how you seem to make every person who comes to your register happy and appreciated. I was hoping I’d end up with you taking care of my return because I wanted to tell you what a wonderful representative you are for TJ Maxx. You really make a difference with your warmth, generosity, and kindness.”

Completely taken aback by my praise, she said, almost blushing, “You made my day!” Her surprise at my praise made it clear that she didn’t provide this delightful service to win praise or credit. She did it because she cared about lifting others’ spirits. Her authenticity sprang from her desire to give, not to get.  And the more happiness she gave to others, the more she felt herself.

As she worked through my return, she told me the story of where she came from and her inspiration. “When I was a little girl, we often stopped by Krispy Kreme on the way to school. We were almost always taken care of by the kindest lady I’ve ever met. She was sweeter than the doughnuts! I told my mom that when I grew up, I wanted to be just like my Krispy Kreme hero because she always made everyone feel so happy. I think of her almost every day when I come to work.”

As I prepared to leave, I thanked her again for the joy she gave me and others. I told her that her Krispy Kreme story made me think of my favorite movie, the Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life. In the Frank Capra masterpiece, a hardworking, seemingly average guy named George Bailey (played by Jimmy Stewart) sees himself as a failure, a man who failed to pursue his dreams or achieve his goals, to do big things in the world. He is blind to the enormous difference he has made in the lives of so many through his daily kindnesses, his countless thoughtful actions in service to others, and the unshakable loyalty he demonstrates to his family, friends, and community. It took his guardian angel, Clarence, to awaken George to the tremendous positive impact he had made, and to the fact that he truly lived a wonderful life…
